Though we went months without talking, I could always count on Ned's phone call in April on the anniversary of the night we met at Layhill McDonalds in 1969. The next call came in July on my birthday and I would call Ned on his birthday. It's so sad to think, we'll never make those calls again. I will truly miss the long conversations on the phone and the short visits when he passed through from Maryland to WV. I love you, Ned. You'll always have a special place in my heart. My sincere prayers go out to the family. May God give you strength to deal with this great loss.

I was thinking toady as we carried you to that beautiful hilltop, of the words to an old song we used to do. "I've walked a starlit mountain road, felt the Earth turn when I'm high." "Heard a universe that's singing, "I'm not afraid to die' ". "Lay me anywhere you will and I'll still be part of you, so don't bother with white satin, when my old blue jeans will do"

Ned had a way of looking at you and making you feel like you were special. His smile always brought a sparkle to his eyes. Although I've known him for more than 30 years, I hadn't seen him for quite a while. My memories of Ned are all wonderful. In a gray tux walking beside Tim and Jack at my wedding, smiling, singing and doing that special hip wiggle while he played bass. My heart aches and my deepest sympathy goes to all his friends and family. Our memories will keep Ned alive in our hearts forever.

The last time I spoke with Ned was by phone over 20 years ago, but this news brings him back as if we were still at Sherwood or hanging out later at Layhill. Ned was always a truly nice person. Whether by nature or upbringing or both, he was a class act and sweet as pie. Ned, I'm so sorry to hear you passed, and so young. Please know what a pleasure it was to have known you.

Ned, I just don't know what to say, you have left us way to early - we were all supposed to grow old and gray together, but then, I guess someone had to go first to find a new "Layhill" on the other side. I will always love you. Won't say goodby - will say "Thanks for the memories". God Bless you Ned, Miss. Sonja

Ned, thanks for your time with us, short though it now seems. Because of it we are all richer. The years we sang and played music together were among the happiest of my life. We'll do it again somewhere. (Dear friends, I can't be with you physically at Ned's this weekend but I shall surely be there in spirit ... I hope someone will do his or her best to sing "Bluegrass Melodies" the way Ned did.)
